Step Inside Shipley’s Present

Freelance photographer Roger moody who is a member of proNet’s Spen Valley Group, invites people to see his work at the Shipley Focus’d exhibition in Shipley near Bradford throughout August and up until October 1st

Roger explains,

May I invite you to visit my photographic exhibition at Shipley Focus’d, in Shipley, which looks to the future of Shipley taking its inspiration from the past. In times gone by shopkeepers often had their portrait taken as they stood proudly outside their shop. I hope this exhibition will replicate this tradition and capture a moment in time from 2010.”

The exhibition “Step Inside Shipley” opens 20th August till October 1st and is aimed at encouraging customers to visit the shops and meet the people who run them. Through my images, I capture the personality of the people who are the lifeblood of the shops and businesses of Shipley Town Centre.

Some of the shops featured are small independent ventures, which have the benefit of offering an individual and personal service, which can sometimes be missed in much larger corporate chains. These smaller businesses create the variety needed to sustain a unique local shopping experience and this exhibition demonstrates the importance of this.

The exhibition complements the previous Shipley Focus`d photographic gallery which features pictures from the 1930s to the 1960s taken from the archives of C H Wood. Shipley Focus’d was created from an empty shop to regenerate interest in Shipley Town Centre, so it was fitting that this second exhibition should be a celebration of the vibrancy and thriving community spirit within the Shipley retail sector.

Refreshments and entertainment will be on offer at the opening Friday 20th August between 10.30 – 12.30 and don’t forget to experience some of the local shops for yourself.

Step-Up Market Challenge

proNet’s Spen Valley Member Jaimie Dobson from internet consultancy iNet inSights has been mentoring a team of school children in Bradford which forms part of Bradford Council’s Step Up Enterprise initiative.

His team is from St Cuthbert’s & The First Martyrs’ Primary School in Bradford (only 10 years old – bless ‘em) where he’s been guiding them through the basics of product development and marketing for an innovative recycling bin aimed at children.

The time now draws near where their product will be sold on a market stall on Darley Street in Bradford on Saturday 26th June. Jaimie’s team will be competing against 30 teams from 25 other schools across the City.

Your Support Wanted

Jaimie is now asking foryour support for his school’s team on Saturday to help them compete.

This you can do simply and easily, by visiting his team’s stall on the day (and ideally buying one of their innovative recycling products) between 10am and 2pm.

Please take the time to come and say hello. It’s going to be a fun day out.

Your Official Invitation

Ashleigh McMillan, Enterprise Enablement Manager with Bradford Coucil explains the event in more detail and offers everyone in the region an open invitation;

This event is the grand final of the Market Challenge which is the first district wide challenge to come from the council’s Step Up Enterprise team, the Kickstart funded programme run in partnership with the Department of Services to Children & Young People and the Department of Regeneration.
I would be delighted if you could join us at the market on Saturday 26th June 2010 on Darley Street, central Bradford. Each team is currently progressing their business idea and designing a market stall. They will then sell their goods between 10am and 2pm on Saturday. Products on offer include a huggable cushion, scarves made from recycled materials, hand crafted jewellery, ‘super shortbread’ , a thumb wrestling arena , and much more.Successful traders will have the chance to win a share of prizes worth up to £2,000.

Ashleigh continues to say,

We will be joined by Claire Jones (Finalist of the 2008 BBC1 The Apprentice show) who will chat to the groups and judge one of the awards. Also joining us will be the Lord Mayor who will present four awards to the teams at 3pm. There are two prizes for each age category, one for the highest profit margin and the other for the most effective marketing.

So why not come along down to Darley Street in Bradford this Saturday and support all the teams?
